Teacher and Educator

Becky has over 10 years experience teaching music. As a trombone and low brass specialist she has had the privilege of holding low brass coach and teaching positions across a wide variety of independent and state funded schools, as well as a small but significant private studio. She has taught whole class trumpet, trombone, baritone and recorder as well as curriculum music in both primary and secondary settings. She has planned and executed the last two youth days for the British Trombone Society National Festival and continues to work on their offering to members under 18.

Becky taught our daughter both tenor horn & saxophone for over six years helping her obtain ABRSM certificates at Grade 7 & 8 alongside theory certification to grade 5. We were so impressed with the care, time, patience she has and how she works with her students so they don't simply achieve they enjoy what they are learning. without Becky's support and advice when shopping for instruments, finding good quality repair workshops, pianists for accompaniments and more we would really have struggled to help our daughter pursue her musicality. Thanks to Becky our daughter joined in large band events in our region, played in both an award winning brass youth band & also a local swing band, where perhaps she could have shied away and kept alot of her talent hidden she felt supported and confident to put herself out there performing for a variety of audiences & around the world on her band tours. Massive Thank you Becky, we are very grateful!!

Becky's Teaching Ethos

Becky is the specialist brass teacher at the West Bradford School and the Toot Hill School, as well as delivering curriculum instrumental lessons. She particularly enjoys working with ensembles in her teaching settings. She is proud to be the low brass tutor for the Birmingham Schools Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble. She encourages all of her pupils at the appropriate standard to audition for ensembles such as these in their local area and nationally, to enhance their musical lives and meet new people. She aims to be an advocate for raising the profile of brass, especially amongst girls and those from less advantaged backgrounds. Whilst she is a low brass specialist, she has also taught trumpet/cornet and French horn to a high level.

Becky has supported her students through their academic music studies and encourages teaching theory alongside instrumental learning. She has played with and prepared students for auditions and GCSE and A Level recordings. She also cares about students looking for a pathway into continuing their music in higher education, either at university or conservatoire, or just as a hobby alongside a different degree or apprenticeship.

On a personal level, Becky aims to always be patient but firm and tries to treat her pupils with kindness, encouragement, and respect. She aims to lead them to see their own potential and become confident musicians and young people, as well as leading their own learning and practice.

Becky has undertaken Child Safeguarding Training and holds a current DBS check.
